I just sent a friend an email about the new Explosions in the Sky. After I wrote it, I realized, sweet, I had captured the experience pretty well. It goes something like this:
I like it a lot. At first listen I focused on the little experimental touches and got distracted from the big picture. On the whole, it’s stellar. I think the aforementioned bits of experimentation fall flat, but their dramatic and melodic senses are still strong.
Standout track is “Postcard from 1952.” Recalls the past glories of “The Only Moment We Were Alone.”
As an aside, one of the reasons I feel such an affinity for this band is b/c they were nearly all metalheads when growing up.
