Mystery is present when you pick up an iPad for the first time. Why are the icons spaced out across the screen when they could be clustered much closer together to save space. Why does the default screen saver look like water on the inside of the screen?

This struck me. What is otherwise a pretty interesting read on the UI of Angry Birds, gets pretty outlandish when referencing the iPad. I won’t take issue with the device’s success or overall quality, but I’m still mystified how a company like Apple could be so lazy WRT the default screen. That spacing is anything but mysterious to me. I think it’s pretty anemic and dull. If people want to attribute it to zen-like simplicity, fine. But I don’t see it.
